In an exciting game with momentum bouncing back and forth, the Nease Panthers challenged rival Ponte Vedra and gave the Sharks about all they could handle. The district six teams met on Ponte Vedra’s somewhat slippery turf under a big moon on a beautiful night. Nease got the first goal of the game but Ponte Vedra struck back with five straight points, three of them by standout Miles Silva. He led his team in scoring with a total of seven goals against Nease.
Clay Welch (2), Rob Peeters (1) and Logan Taucher (1) also contributed to give Ponte Vedra a 7-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. Nease came on strong in the next period, adding four goals and cutting Ponte Vedra’s lead to 8-7 by halftime.
While the Sharks’ defense held strong in the third quarter, its talented offense outscored Nease six goals to two. Eric Applegate got two of PV’s goals and Reid Smith racked up his third successful shot of the night. Panthers’ leading scorer Brent Whiting fired two of his four goals in the third period. Nease picked it up again in the fourth quarter, scoring four goals in a row… two of them by Robert Forrest. The Panthers fought with heart and at one point narrowed the gap to four points. But Ponte Vedra went on to win the game 19-13.
The Sharks improve their record to 8-1 and play visiting Charlotte Catholic on Friday before facing an undefeated team from Lake Mary Saturday. Nease falls to 5-3 and host Mandarin High School Friday.
