This year we had 169 boys teams playing FHSAA lacrosse with 5680 boys playing and there were 152 girls teams with 4256 girls participating. That is a 15.5% growth in participants in just one year. That is an astounding 56% growth in FHSAA participation since just the 2011 season.
It is important for our sport that we continue this type of growth. Right now, our numbers are similar to other “recognized” sports. I always hear folks talk about the importance of becoming a true FHSAA “sanctioned” sport and I always here lots of conspiracy theories as the why it hasn’t happened yet. (One of the benefits of becoming a sanctioned sport is that two teams advance per district in an enlarged playoff system.)
But if you look at the sports participation numbers which can be found at this link you can see it has a lot to do with our numbers. Please take a look at the Recognized/Sanctioned sports here at this link.
There is plenty of good news in our growth numbers. So let’s continue to grow the game wisely with great coaching, great officiating, and no helmets for the girls!!!
