Vero’s Uncommitted Maggie Funk At The Maverik Showcase

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in .
Thanks to Bianca Diaz for this interview!   The Maverik Showcase has been around for the past 6 years and this is the 2nd year that the camp has been an event for girls. This invite-only event is held at Western Connecticut State University an is limited to only 160 rising sophomores and 160 rising juniors, many of whom are already committed. Every Division 1 head coach and his staff were represented at the event. These coaches lined up on the sidelines daily, from start to finish. The coaches wanted to see who will be the next kid to be “committed” to their schools. Maggie Funk was the only girl who represented the entire state of Florida at the showcase and without a doubt made a name for herself both at the event and in this state.   Name:  Maggie Funk Position:  Attack Year:  2016 High School Team:  Vero Beach Club Team:  Stickbenders/X-Team   maggie showtime   Are you committed anywhere? If so, where? I’m not committed anywhere as the schools I’m looking at need me to complete my junior year of academics first.   How were the teams arranged? The teams were randomly assigned and selected by position Forex.   How did you feel being that you were the only girl from Florida at the event? Being the only girl at the event from Florida wasn’t an issue for me since my Xteam teammates are from all over the USA. I don’t think it really matters as much anymore. if you can play, no one cares where you’re from. The truth is, in my opinion, the best players are still from Long Island and Maryland.   Did you feel pressured being surrounded by all those coaches while you played? I didn’t feel pressured from the coaches watching, I was focused on trying to help my team win.   Highlight of the event:  Highlight of the event was going undefeated during the camp!   If you were to give advice to future players who got invited to Showtime, what would you tell them?: Be yourself and play hard. Don’t try to be something you’re not both on the field and off. Enjoy the opportunity to play with really good players and see where you need improvement.   Good luck to Maggie as she goes through her recruiting process and thanks again to Bianca Diaz for providing the interview!
