via Ave Maria press release   AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Lady Gyrene lacrosse team gave eighth-ranked Georgetown all they could handle Wednesday afternoon, falling to the Tigers 11-10 in overtime. Georgetown scored the winning goal 30 seconds into the overtime period. Georgetown scored the game’s first goal nearly 13 minutes into the game. Georgie Miller netted the first goal for AMU a few minutes later to even the game at one. After a Tiger goal, Katelyn Sherman found the back of the net to even the game. The Tigers added a goal with 5:50 to play in the first half to take a 3-2 lead into the half and scored to start the second to increase their lead to 4-2. Ave Maria responded to the two straight goals by Georgetown with two goals of their own by Aiyanah Simms and Alexis Smich to tie the game at four. The Tigers then scored four straight to take a 8-4 advantage. A goal by Sherman and two by Simms brought AMU to within one. Trailing 10-7 with 4:45 remaining, Stephanie Hilker, Miller, and Sherman scored three consecutive goals, the last with a minute to play, to tie the game at 10-10. In overtime, Georgetown won the opening draw control and scored 30 seconds into the sudden victory extra frame to win the game. Georgetown held a 23-19 edge in shots on goal and a 17-6 advantage in draw controls. AMU had 22 ground balls compared to 18 by the Tigers. Sherman and Simms each had three goals for AMU. Miller added two goals for the Lady Gyrenes. Anneliese Sawick recorded a team-best four caused turnovers and tied Andie Wagner with five ground balls. Wagner made 12 saves and allowed 11 goals in the loss. The Lady Gyrenes return to action on Friday when they host #2 Cumberlands (Ky.) at 4 p.m.
